Faust - Show InformationFaust strikes a deal with the devil. In return for his soul, the devil grants Faust wealth, power and youth and Faust soon falls in love with the beautiful Marguerite.Based on the literary masterpiece by Goethe, the opera Faust has had its ups and downs in popularity. The major theme seems concerned with eternal damnation and eternal blessing. Faust considers suicide twice but is stopped when he hears the singing of a choir. As he prays for guidance, Mephistopheles appears to urge him to make a deal concerning eternity. The innocent Marguerite carries the idea of the good girl who has gone bad for a time in this opera. She has become pregnant by Faust and carries the stigma of a bad girl. She tries to pray at church but is prevented both by Mephistopheles and by a choir of devils. In the end, Marguerite hallucinates about Faust's hands being covered in blood. Extremes are seen in this opera including Heaven and Hell.
