La Cenerentola - Show Information
The classic story of Cinderella is told with a few minor differences.This takeoff from the Cinderella story has a few twists which are not included in the traditional story of Cinderella. Rossini had definite ideas about writing this opera, one of which was a lack of magic in the opera.
Angelina is the Cinderella type character, and her two sisters are Tisbe and Clorinda. The Prince in this story trades places with his valet in order to find a woman who will love him for his own character rather than for being the Prince. The valet, acting as if he were the Prince, makes an offer to the two sisters. He offers the one whom he does not chose for himself the chance to marry the Prince, who is disguised as the valet. Both girls reject such an offer to marry the man whom they think is only the valet.
Cenerentola tells the valet, dressed as the Prince, that she is in love with the man who is dressed as a valet.
There are no pumpkins becoming a chariot or mice becoming horses in this opera although the Cinderella story is quite apparent throughout.
