Tosca - Show InformationAfter the painter, Cavaradossi, discovers his fellow revolutionary, Mario, hiding in the church, he agrees to help hide the escaped prisoner. The opening of Pucinni's Tosca seems darker than some of his works. However, he uses the Sacristan to provide some comedy at times. Pucinni's characters are well-defined, making for more believable performances. An escaped political offender named Angelotti has sought refuge in a church in which his family has a chapel. In the same location, a painter named Mario Cavaradossi has been working on a painting of Magdalen while comparing his model with Tosca, a singer and lover of Cavaradossi. Tosca is the jealous type and has misgivings about Cavaradossi's intentions. The sound of a cannon shot causes some people to suspect that Napoleon has been defeated. It is a mistaken assumption. Since Angelotti is in hiding, Tosca is tricked into revealing his hiding place. Cavaradossi is caught and imprisoned. In this opera you will see tragedy mixed with a degree of comedy. In addition, look for murder to prevent a rape and the death of some major characters.
