Regarded by Gilbert as "the best thing we have done", the authors were careful not to dub this a "comic opera".Colonel Fairfax is sentenced to die on a false charge of sorcery. To avoid leaving his estate to his accuser he secretly marries Elsie Maynard, who expects to be a well-paid widow. But Fairfax escapes and disguised woos Elsie, who falls in love with Fairfax and jilts her intended husband, the jester Jack Point.
