About Playhouse Theatre

With seating for 800 people, this rebuilt theatre was bought with the purpose of enlarging Charing Cross Station, using this land. However, that never was accomplished so the theatre remains.

It was called Royal Avenue Theatre when originally built in 1882. After a disaster which killed a few people in 1905 the theatre opened for business again in 1907 and was renamed The Playhouse.

From 1951 to 1975 BBC Radio used this theatre to record in front of live audiences. Some of those programs were Hancock’s Half Hour, The Goon Show and Steptoe and Son.

More recent productions include Funny Money, It Runs in the Family, and A Doll’s House.
