About Lyric Theatre

Built in 1888, this is the oldest of the theatres on Shaftesbury Avenue. There are 967 seats in the theatre. Interior redecoration was done in the 1930s while the exterior was restored in 1994.

The original focus of the theatre was on operettas. That was before good lighting was available. When electric lighting became more available, Lyric Theatre began staging straight drama and light comedies.

Among its successes are The Little Hut, How the Other Half Loves, Theatre Dark, and Five Guys Named Moe. Its first production upon opening in 1888 was Dorothy, a comic opera.
