About Dominion Theatre

This is both a theatre and a cinema, all in one unit. The theatre is built on land which was once a brewery. Also, a leper colony was located at the same site at one time. In 1929 the theatre was erected and struggled to get enough patrons to be profitable.

When the theatre became a cinema, it got more attention with films such as “Phantom of the Opera” and “City Lights”. King George V even attended here. Such greats as Judy Garland, Maurice Chevalier, Shirley Maclaine and Sophie Tucker have appeared in this theatre as well. “South Pacific” and “Sound of Music” were featured films which brought in crowds.

The seating capacity of the theatre has been reduced from the original 2835 to 2007.
