Student Home Insurance

If you're a student or a parent supporting a student about to go to University then you will want to ensure that any possessions are fully insured against loss or damage.

You will need student home insurance, which can offer total protection for possessions, whether living in halls or residence or rented accommodation. Student home insurance is available online and from a wide range of insurers and providers including high street banks, leading stores and supermarkets.

Whilst students don't have the same needs of a home contents policy they do have valuable items of equipment such as lap tops, pc's, hi-fi, ipods, mobile phones, musical instruments and personal belongings which are all expensive to replace.

Student home insurance need not be expensive and some policies start from as little as £3 a month and can be paid by the student, parent or guardian. Eligibility for student home insurance is normally a minimum age of 16. The following may also apply:

  • To qualify for student home insurance you must be a full time student attending a University or College within the United Kingdom, or a part time student if you are receiving a Disabled Student Allowance;
  • You have personally never had any insurance cancelled, refuse or declared void or received any special terms or conditions imposed by another insurer;
  • That you have never been convicted of or charged with any non-motoring offence;
  • The total value of your contents to be insured does not exceed £8,000.

There may be other pre conditions set by student home insurance providers, which you should check with the insurers first.

Student home insurance cover normally starts at £2,000 up to a maximum of £8,000 and all claims are normally settled on a new for old basis, except for clothing. All claims on the student home insurance can be made on the 24 hour emergency help line.

Student home insurance will normally have a single item value limit of approximately £500. You should check this with all insurers prior to accepting terms and, if you have items of a higher value than this, you can normally negotiate with the insurer to arrange for inclusion. Student home insurance can also be extended to cover legal expenses, expensive pc's and pedal cycles.

As a student you value your possessions, as you're not likely to have the money to easily replace them if they were stolen or damaged beyond repair. As theft of students' possessions, particularly in shared accommodation buildings, is higher than living at home you must consider that student home insurance is a worth while expense. Naturally most students don't want to be worrying about things such as student home insurance and instead you want to concentrate on your studies and enjoying your time at University. Student home insurance gives the peace of mind to do just that and you will be surprised at the low cost.
