Sheffield Sports Teams

Sheffield was the first National City of Sport. Its outstanding facilities host international Grand Prix athletics at Don Valley Stadium and world swimming at Ponds Forge; together with Division 1 football, top-class ice-hockey, rugby league and world championship snooker. There is a huge variety of spectator sport.

The two football teams of Wednesday and United both fight for promotion to the Premiership this season. After a disastrous relegation season, Sheffield Wednesday have a new manager in Paul Jewell, superb facilities at Hillsborough and are hopeful they will bounce straight back up. The Blades of United also challenge and hope to get one over on their rivals in the local derby games on 16th December 2000 at Brammall Lane and 31st March 2001 at Hillsborough.

If cheerleaders, loud music, speed and confrontations are your idea of sport heaven, your next destination should be Sheffield Arena to see the Sheffield Steelers ice hockey team. The Steelers were formed in 1991 and now attract regular crowds of 10,000. They were Challenge Cup winners in 1999 and successfully retained the trophy in 2000. Also at the Arena, are the league-winning Sheffield Sharks basketball team. They originally played at Ponds Forge, but their growing fanbase led them to move to the Arena where they attract regular crowds of over 5000.

Rugby League in Sheffield has had a difficult few years. At the end of the 1999 season, the Sheffield Eagles merged with rivals Huddersfield to create the Sheffield-Huddersfield Giants. Sheffield games are played at Bramall Lane, with the majority of home matches are at the McAlpine Stadium in Huddersfield. This controversial move had many critics, especially after the team had increased its profile by winning the 1998 Challenge Cup at Wembley. The outcry from Eagle fans, led to former player and manager Mark Aston, relaunching the club who now play in the Northern Ford Premier League and play their home games at Don Valley Stadium.

Speedway is also growing in popularity and every Thursday racenight at the Owlerton Stadium, you can catch the Sheffield Tigers. Owlerton stadium also has greyhound racing.
