Nightlife

New pubs, clubs, restaurants and bars, Sheffield nightlife is buzzing. Attracting clubbers from all over the country, Sheffield has some of the best clubs in the north, if not the country.

Clubs

Republic is a massively popular dance superclub, famous as host to Gatecrasher. Gatecrasher is an institution with nation-wide reputation; guest line-ups making up a comprehensive who's who of the British DJ set - Judge Jules, Seb Fontaine and Pete Tong. Owned by Gatecrasher new club Bed has yet to truly establish itself, although Friday night's Remedy and Wednesday's Steem are building crowds. The Unit hosts NY Sushi, a popular well-established drum and bass, hip hop and break beat Saturday night.

The Leadmill is one of the most established venues; with three rooms and a café bar, it is open 6 nights a week, playing host to live bands in its Saturday Step On night, cheesy student nights, midweek 70s and 80s classics. Cheesy commercial dance does dominate with out of town superclub Club Wow, Kingdom - (the central Pulse and Vogue) and other venues such as Uropa, Josephines.

However, challenging the superclub phenomenon are new innovative nights breaking away from the house scene, such as Phon-etics @Po Na Na (Saturdays). In Moroccan surroundings, Phon-etics mixes live instrumentalists with hip hop, funk, and break beat, and has attracted DJs such as Andy Smith from Portishead. Upstairs, the intimate Fez Club hosts nights such as Scuba. The Tuesday Club at the University was described by the Guardian Guide as "the most innovative midweek night in the North", with a mixture of drum and bass, it attracts a mixed crowd of students and professionals. Corporation has rock, punk and ska nights. The last Friday of the month at the Underground is Headcharge, a trance-techno night with a regular, up-for-it crowd.

There are several 70s nights Hot Pants at the City Hall and Bus Stop at the Roundhouse. It is not unusual to see afro wigs, featherboas, flares and platforms tripping down Division and West Street.

Sheffield does not have a huge gay scene, but Climax, monthly at the University (open to all) is a great night and Poptastic at the City Hall is also popular.

"Sheffield nightlife attracts visitors from all over the country"

Live Music

The Boardwalk has been a music venue for 30 years, launching careers of Joe Cocker, Human League, etc, now it has a reputation as a folk and blues venue and is establishing a world music night. There are weekly unsigned band nights.

A tram-ride away at Hillsborough is The Deep End; there is music most nights and twice-weekly jamming sessions where you can turn up with your instrument and join in.
