The Japanese Cherry Blossom Tree Who could resist a sparkling performance so early in the garden, she seems to outdo every thing putting all the energy into making a shining spectacle. The specie Prunus has many wonderful ornamental attributes, not least the Spring blossom which so characterises an early Japanese garden as it slowly reawakens from its winter slumber. The Japanese Cherry or Sakura means tree on which God sits, and is a symbol of life and beauty. In Spring Japanese parks hold ohanami or 'flower viewing' and people picnic, sing and enjoy the beauty of these trees. Prunus mume or the Japanese Apricot blossoms in early February, tiny starlike bright coral pink flowers with yellow stamens clothe the tree, white forms are also available. Many people believe they are a waste of space, having a short flowering time early in the gardening calendar, however they actually possess an 8 week flowering time. In addition they also provide autumn colours; yellows, tawny oranges and scarlets. Prunus incisa 'Kojo-no-mai' is a small variety with tiny leaves that colour exceptionally well, turning bright scarlet in early Autumn. This handsome tree has a most unusual zig-zagged bark formation making it an interesting subject in a winter garden. This can also be bonsaied easily due to its small size and bears white to pale pink flowers in early Spring. There are weeping forms available, Prunus subhirtella 'Pendula Rubra' bears deep pink flowers down to the ground, also 'Cheals Weeping' with double pink flowers and The Yoshino cherry - Prunus x yedoensis bearing white or pale pink flowers hanging like a standard Wisteria is stunning. The Great White cherry, Prunus 'Taihaku' with very large single, pure white blossom and Prunus 'Hokusai' with semi double pale pink flowers that cover the tree at Blossom time are also great favourites of mine. I believe every garden should contain one Cherry blossom tree, there are many different forms, all are delicate and refined, taking up very little space.
