directionsThe A1, which stretches north-south, connects London with Edinburgh via the city. The A19, heading south to York and Doncaster, crosses A1 just north of Newcastle. The A69 starting at Blaydon, near Newcastle, ends at Carlisle. The north-south A167 starts in North Yorkshire continues through Newcastle and forks out towards the end. The roads starting at Newcastle include A186 going onto North Shields, the A189 going to Ashington and A1058 traveling on to Tynemouth. The A167 heads south to Gateshead.
busBus network is coordinated by Nexus and the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive. Buses are operated mainly by Go North East, Arriva Northumbria and Stagecoach North East. The alternative-fuelled bus scheme QuayLink between the city and Gateshead was launched in 2005.
