World Snooker Championship
The World Snooker Championship is the ultimate of snooker's yearly calendar and the prime important snooker event annually. It is prestigious in terms of both prize money and world ranking points. The World Snooker Championship is currently held at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, England.

Opening times | The opening hours are Monday to Saturday 10am - 8pm. The Ticket Office will close at 6pm on dates without performances. The Lyceum Ticket Office opens 1½ hours before the performance and deals with tickets for that show only. |

Recent United Kingdom legislation has placed restrictions on tobacco advertising which includes sponsorship of sporting events. This caused special consideration about who would sponsor the Snooker Championship since the cigarette brand Embassy had been sponsoring the event. Currently the Championship is sponsored by 888.com after the company signed a five-year sponsorship contract. 888.com is a casino and sporting web site.
During the 2005 Championship it was announced that the Championship would remain at the Crucible Theatre for at least another five years. Plans to build a purpose-built billiardrome in the city are in the early stages. It is anticipated that the World Championships will be switched to the new venue once the current Crucible contract ends. BBC has televised the Snooker Championship in the past and now has a contract to continue at least until 2011.
The Championship was begun in 1927, organized by the legendary Joe Davis. The venues changed from time to time. It appears that the even will have its own venue soon. In the meantime, the Crucible Theatre is pleased to be the hosting venue.
Some conflict in 1954 between the Billiard Association and Control Council, there were two separate tournaments. Players organised the World Matchplay which was recognized as the 'real' tournament until 1957. The Billiard Association and Control Council finally disappeared. There were no tournaments in 1958 and 1963. The decline in interest in the Championship ended in 1969 with a knockout tournament.
