| Description | A fascinating collection, which retains its unique Victorian feel with mammal, bird, fish and insect exhibits in their original cases.
The gallery is set out on two levels with themes of animal movement, defences and evolution explored on the ground floor alongside a display dedicated to Disappearing Birds, which focuses on birds that are under threat or have disappeared completely and includes a life size model of a dodo.
The balcony above examines the variety of animal life and how it can be grouped into vertebrates and invertebrates, plus it displays evidence of life over millions of years in the fossil collection.
The centrepiece is a gigantic walrus brought back to England from Hudson Bay, Canada in the late 1800's. Procured for Frederick Horniman's collection in 1893, this was overstuffed by zealous taxidermists, unfamiliar with how this strange animal was supposed to look.
