Stadium St.James' Park

The origins of Newcastle United can be traced to both Newcastle East End and Newcastle West End Football clubs. The two were rivals formed by Cricket Clubs until West end folded. East End then moved to West Ends ground, St James Park and changed names to Newcastle United. They also changed their strip from Red and White stripes to the now famous Black and White.

Newcastle have won the FA Cup 6 times and the Charity Shield once. They have won the league 5 times (the last time in 1965). In recent history they have been the 'nearly men', losing in the FA cup final in 1998 and 1999 and finishing runners-up in the league in 1996 and 1997.

The mid to late 90's saw a succession of big names joining the club. After a brush with relegation to division two in 1992, the clubs board and finances were restructured and Kevin Keegan was chosen to manage the team. New players were introduced and the beginning of the season saw them race to the top of the league after winning their first eleven games. Promotion to the Premiership was clinched and attendances almost doubled. The following season the Magpies finished third in the Premiership - Newcastle were back!

In 1996 Keegan signed Alan Shearer and parted company with the club in controversial circumstances. Shearer was to become a legend on Tyneside and have 10 successful years at the club.
