Riverside Football Club were formed in 1899 as a way to keep the Cricket Club together during the winter months. Home games were played at Sophia Gardens and the teams first colours were an unusual Chocolate and Amber quarters with black shorts. They amalgamated with Riverside Albion in 1902 and won the Bevan Cup three years later. In 1905 Cardiff received the status of City but the club were unable to change names to represent this as they were thought to be not playing to a high enough standard. In 1908 their request was finally granted and they became Cardiff City FC.

The team was soon outgrowing Sophia Gardens. Its lack of facilities and structure were hindering the Clubs ambitions of playing in higher leagues. The team had already played against higher ranked English opposition and the attendances had been encouraging. A new ground was sought and some waste ground next to Sloper Road was acquired after a promise of help from Cardiff Corporation. Voluntary and Corporation workers transferred the land and Lord Ninian Crichton-Stewart became its guarantor. As a tribute to his financial help, the ground was named Ninian Park.

The Bluebirds are the only non-English team to ever win the FA Cup. This feat was completed in 1927 when they beat Arsenal one - nil at Wembley; they then went on to win the Charity Shield in the same year. Cardiff have also played in the European Cup Winners Cup, reaching the Semi-finals in 1968. The Welsh Cup has been won no les than 22 times by the club.

Cardiff are one of a few Welsh clubs to ever compete in the English league.
