Burnley Football were established in 1882 when Burnley Rovers Rugby Club decided to start playing football. They turned professional a year later and were founder members of the Football League when it started in 1888. As a football team they have always had Turf Moor as their home ground.
Burnley have not played in the top flight since 1976 and endured seven seasons in the bottom division. For the 1986/7 season the Football League had introduced automatic relegation from the Football League for the bottom club. Burnley won the last game of that season to avoid the unthinkable relegation with Lincoln City going down instead.
Burnley have won the FA Cup once and the League twice. They won the Charity Shield in the 1973/ 4 campaign and shared the honours in 1960/1. Burnley have won all the league titles, they completed this feat in 1992 when they were Champions of the fourth division. This record had only been previously done by Wolves.
At the turn of the century Burnley were serious contenders for promotion back to the top flight. However fluctuating form prevented them from making the grade.
