UK Festivals & Shows

London Fashion Week is a celebration of fashion, based at the Natural History Museum, but of course there is also fashion in restaurants, bars, clubs & on the street.

London Fashion Week is where many newcomers begin their businesses and new fashions start. Professionals, the press and customers travel to London from all over the world to see over 50 designers represented on the catwalk, and the many more designers at the exhibition, all showing their, often radical, ideas, creativity and glamour.

London Fashion Week attracts the top new designers from all over the world, and has a unique ability to develop those talents, pushing for their success. Each year, at London Fashion Week, a New Generation programme operates, which supports emerging design talent on both a promotional and commercial basis. The New Generation was introduced in 1993, and helps young designers, through sponsorship, to launch their careers, promoting them, encouraging and supporting them at London Fashion Week, attracting the media, enabling them to receive orders and investment.

Also, there is Fashion East, which was set up in September 2000, to give up and coming designers an opportunity to show their collections on the runway during London Fashion Week.

Another project, Fashion Fringe has been running since September 2004 as part of the official London Fashion Week schedule. Fashion Fringe at London Fashion Week was established to discover and support young British design talent. It operates in the form of a competition, sourcing on-going technical and financial support for exceptional fashion designers.

London Fashion Week is owned and organised by the British Fashion Council. London Fashion Week runs in September and represents the fashion trends for the following Spring.

The London Fashion Week has become one of the premier fashion events, for the designers, the models and the customers. As mentioned before, there are catwalk shows, where around 50 shows take place over the 5 days of London Fashion Week, but Eruope's largest selling exhibition is the one at London Fashion Week in specially erected tents in the Natural History Museum. Various designers will be displaying their exciting new collections, some of which will be established designers; some will be graduates and some master students from fashion schools such as Central St Martin's, which is the best place to study fashion, producing some of the most promising new talent in Britain.

Many famous models appear on the catwalk at the London Fashion Week, such as Naomi Campbell, Elizabeth Jagger and Jacquetta Wheeler. Interestingly though, there are some designers who choose not to use professional models, as they don't want the audience's attention on the models, but on their fashion designing.

London Fashion Week is a trade show open to registered buyers, the media and members of the fashion industry. However, a separate London Fashion Weekend is held later in September , which is open to all members of the public, giving all of us the chance to see our favourite designers' collections. It also gives us the chance to see the new talent that will be on the catwalks and in the magazine pages in the months to come. You can even take up the opportunity to treat yourself to a make-over from a professional make-up artist, try the latest relaxation treatments and maybe even pick up a few fashion bargains in the process from London Fashion Week.
