Transport
The M6 motorway connects the city with Coventry and Birmingham in the South. The M74/A74 connects the city with Glasgow. The A595 links the city with western Cumbria, while running along the West coast. Many other important trunk roads either begin or terminate in Carlisle, including the A6 to southern Penrith, the A69 to Newcastle-upon-Tyne and the A7 to Edinburgh.
Local bus services are run by Cumberland, of Whitehaven, and Arriva Northumbria. Other operators include National Express of Birmingham, Fellrunner, First Edinburgh (also called Eastern Scottish), King of Kirkcowan, Reays Minibus Service and Irvings Coaches.
The Carlisle Airport offers an easy link to the Lake District and the South of Scotland. The other nearest airport, the Newcastle International Airport, is about 49.28 miles away from the city.
