The village of Great Ayton lies on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, at the foot of the Cleveland Hills. Great Ayton is famous for being the boyhood home of Captain Cook, and is also mentioned in the Domesday Book. The village consists of a mixture of stone cottages and some new development housing. Great Ayton has two village greens, with a river running alongside, making it a popular picnic spot in the summer months. To the north of the village, the view is dominated by Roseberry Topping, a 330 metre hill. In the village are a good range of shops and inns, which, together with restaurants and cafes, cater well for holidaymakers. There is also the old school, now converted into the Captain Cook Schoolroom Museum. Around the village are several interesting walks and Great Ayton makes a great base for walkers wishing to explore the stunning countryside around, especially in the summer months when the moors turn purple with blooming heather.

The North York Moors National Park covers 554 square miles, with landscape ranging from heather-clad moorland and deep secluded dales, to the cliffs and coves of the magnificent coastline making it a haven for walkers.

The cottage was an excellent base for great walks in the area. The owners were lovely and friendly, and were very informative about local walks and places to visit in the area. The cottage itself was excellent with everything you need for a weeks holiday, together with great views from out front. I will definitely be revisiting this accommodation.
Mrs Oldham, Altrincham, Greater Manchester
August 2013

,This is a well set-out, pleasant property. It is in a great location for walking and very convenient to both the coast and the moors. The owners are readily available and very helpful. It was a real bonus to for our dog to be next door to a large, enclosed field. The underfloor heating is very cosy, too.
Mrs Copland, Tillicoultry, Clackmannanshire
June 2013

,Good location, lovely scenery, perfect for a week with 2 small dogs.
Ms Wildman, Bedford, Bedfordshire
May 2013

,Lovely cottage with a sunny outside space to sit out in. Lovely views and fresh air! Owner lives nearby and couldn't help us enough. Would book again.
Miss Bates, Hexham, Northumberland
August 2012
