Ely (6 miles), occupying the largest island in the Fens, has a history dating back to Hereward the Wake and, later, Oliver Cromwell. Its superb 11th century cathedral is surrounded by monastic buildings, medieval gateways and narrow streets leading down to the marina and river walks. King's Lynn and Cambridge are easily accessible. Shops, riverside inns and restaurants at Littleport (3 miles).
