Film Details |
Yusef (Bobby Naderi), a straitlaced Pakistani American college student, moves in with a group of Muslim punks in Buffalo, New York. His new unorthodox housemates soon introduce him to Taqwacore â€" the western American Muslim punk rock scene. But how do hardcore punks like Jehangir (Dominic Rains) and burqa-wearing Rabeya (Noureen DeWulf) reconcile their radical countercultural lifestyles with their Muslim faith?
The Taqwacores is a bold and irreverent piece of indie filmmaking which shines a brave and uncompromising light on what it means to be young and Muslim in modern-day America post 9-11.
Originally handed out for free in parking lots as a photocopied zine, The Taqwacores novel has now been published in the United States, the UK, Italy and France. Its fictional punk scene inspired the now real-life Taqwacore scene and bands such as The Kominas, and this is the film based on that book.
