Rocky
John G Avildsen's hard-hitting 1976 sports drama, which won three Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director, returns to cinemas this week along with four sequels and the 2006 reboot Rocky Balboa, which invited Sylvester Stallone to dust off his boxing gloves as the eponymous bruiser. In the original film, undefeated heavyweight boxing champion Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) is poised to defend his title against Mac Lee Green at the Philadelphia Spectrum. When the challenger injures his hand and pulls out of the high-profile bout, Creed chooses small-time local boxer Rocky Balboa (Stallone), nicknamed "The Italian Stallion", as a replacement. Aided by gym owner Mickey Goldmill (Burgess Meredith) and good friend Paulie (Burt Young), Rocky prepares for the fight of his life. Outside of the ring, he suffers a few glancing blows to his ego as he romances pet shop worker Adrian Pennino (Talia Shire)
