Shot predominantly in black and white, Russian director Kirill Serebrennikov's unconventional drama explores the air of musical rebellion that swept through 1980s Leningrad, fuelled by punk, rock and new wave from Britain and America. Mike (Roman Bilyk) is the lead singer of one of the city's most popular bands and basks in his celebrity with glamorous girlfriend Natasha (Irina Starshenbaum). When they are not inhabiting clubs, thronged by fans, the couple raise their baby in a cramped apartment. Gifted singer-songwriter Viktor (Teo Yoo) is a new arrival to the music scene and Mike is his idol. Natasha is one of the first people to acknowledge Viktor's raw, untapped potential and as she gravitates towards her boyfriend's biggest fan, she becomes one point of a volatile love triangle.
