Abhishek Varman directs a sweeping Hindi-language romance set in 1945 pre-independent India. Formidable patriarch Balraj Chaudhry (Sanjay Dutt) is a man of few words in the North Indian town of Husnabad, where his family are part of a wealthy and privileged elite. Prodigal son Dev Chaudhry (Aditya Roy Kapur) is married to Satya (Sonakshi Sinha) but he attempts to woo the beautiful Roop (Alia Bhatt). Her faith in true love is warped by Dev's lustful deception and her heart is stirred instead by handsome bullfighter and rebel Zafar (Varun Dhawan), who harks from Hira Mandi. Divided by social standing, Roop and Zafar nevertheless fall madly in love. Balraj uses his considerable influence to ward off Zafar but nothing can separate the lovers until the fires of partition burn brightly. A beautiful dancer called Bahaar Begum (Madhuri Dixit) watches the relationship ignite from the sidelines.
