Mulan
Based on a 5th century Chinese tale about a young woman who impersonates a man in order to take her injured father's place in the national army, the film boasts some truly jaw-dropping animation (the Hun horseback attack down a snow-laden mountain, Mulan's transformation into a warrior), nicely judged humour and memorable characters. Eddie Murphy puts his comedic schtick into overdrive as dragon sidekick Mushu, but the film's heart and soul is very much its heroine and her struggle to make her family proud of her. A feminist fairy-tale from the House of the Mouse: who would have thought it?
