Life Itself
Writer-director Dan Fogelman, creator of Emmy Award-winning TV series This Is Us, continues to contemplate matters of the broken heart in a multi-faceted drama, which explores the ripple effect of senseless tragedy across generations and continents. Gifted scriptwriter Will Dempsey (Oscar Isaac) is an emotional wreck after his wife Abby (Olivia Wilde) leaves him. He searches for answers in the company of his therapist Dr Cait Morris (Annette Bening), who he subsequently witnesses being hit by a bus on the streets of New York. On board the ill-fated public transport is a little boy called Rodrigo Gonzalez (Adrian Marrero). Time reverses to detail the past of Rodrigo's parents Javier (Sergio Peris-Mencheta) and Isabel (Laia Costa), a manual labourer and waitress respectively, who settle in a house belonging to wealthy land owner Vincent Saccione (Antonio Banderas). The lord of the manor pays secret visits to the house when Javier is at work and lavishes the boy with expensive gifts and the mother with attention. Naturally, Javier grows concerned about the amount of time his employer is spending with his family and he exerts his control over wife and child, which creates friction where once there was harmony.
