The Last Face
Two-time Oscar-winning actor Sean Penn retreats behind the camera for the first time since Into The Wild in 2006 for this timely romance between two international aid workers in war-torn West Africa. Wren Petersen (Charlize Theron) is profoundly aware that she is a disappointment to her father, founder of the not-for-profit organisation Medecins du Monde, who always wanted a son to carry on his legacy. When the old man dies, Wren dutifully carries on his work, marshalling forces on the ground where help is needed most. In 2003 Monrovia, she meets hunky Spanish surgeon Miguel Leon (Javier Bardem), an orphan who has devoted his life to aiding refugees. As acts of shocking violence are perpetrated around them, Wren and Miguel wrestle with their attraction, which is complicated when she learns that Miguel has enjoyed a romantic dalliance with her associate Ellen (Adele Exarchopoulos).
