Gary Numan: Android in La La Land
During the late 1970s and early 1980s, electronic pop pioneer Gary Numan stormed charts around the world with his idiosyncratic sound and stage performances, including the hits Cars, We Are Complex and We Are Glass. He achieved this success while living with Asperger's syndrome at a time when there was little public understanding of the condition. Numan subsequently endured a period in the cultural wilderness marked by depression, anxiety and near bankruptcy, until he met his wife Gemma, who helped the singer to rediscover his love of music. Documentary filmmakers Steve Read and Rob Alexander join Numan, Gemma and their daughters Echo, Persia and Raven as they relocate permanently to California and begin to record a new album, entitled Splinter. Cameras capture personal and professional traumas as the singer seeks creative fulfilment and the rest of the family unpacks and settles into a new environment.
