The Graduate
Well, here's to you Mrs Robinson as director Mike Nichols' satire about a young man's affair with a married woman celebrates its 50th anniversary with a sparkling 4K restoration, which screens in selected cinemas. The Graduate made overnight stars of Dustin Hoffman and Katharine Ross, and established Anne Bancroft as one of modern cinema's most iconic actresses. The production landed six Oscar nominations - Best Picture, Best Actor (Hoffman), Best Actress (Bancroft), Best Supporting Actress (Ross), Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography (Robert Surtees) - and notched up a single win for Nichols as Best Director. Naive college graduate Benjamin Braddock (Hoffman) is seduced by older woman Mrs Robinson (Bancroft), the wife of his father's boss. The affair proves unfulfilling for young Benjamin and so, at the insistence of Mr Robinson (Murray Hamilton), who blissfully unaware of his wife's infidelity, Benjamin agrees to date their daughter, Elaine (Ross). Mrs Robinson is furious to lose Benjamin and does everything within her power to prevent her former conquest from following his heart and marrying Elaine, culminating in a life-altering decision at the altar.
