Twenty-eight-year-old Tom follows in the footsteps of his conniving father, making money from dodgy real estate deals. By chance, he accepts an opportunity to play the piano, like his mother, and takes lessons from a Chinese virtuoso, Miao-Lin, who doesn't speak a word of French. Through the shared language of music, Tom finds the courage to declare his true feelings to his best friend's wife, only for his shady past to catch up with him.
