Southport is the most elegant resort in the north-west of England. The town has wide streets of shops as well as a great boulevard over a mile long, tree-lined and decorated with imposing Victorian buildings, one of the grandest shopping streets in the country. Visitors have been coming to the huge beaches and seaside attractions for over two centuries, and are still immensely important to the town today. David Lewis's book Southport: Life and Landscapes looks at the forgotten stories and buried history of this attractive resort and uses many rarely-seen archive photographs to celebrate the town's beauty and poetry. Exploring lost hotels, old railway stations and demolished pleasure gardens, the book is the result of journeys across the Southport landscape; it looks at the town from the shoreline, from the dunes, and from the dismantled railway lines that run across the reclaimed marshes surrounding the town. The book roots the town in the landscape and celebrates its history as a Georgian and Victorian seaside resort, as well as looking at the modern elements which attract thousands of holidaymakers and conference delegates every year.
