British Schools Museum, The
The British Schools were founded in 1810 on the Queen Street site. The Museum today includes the only surviving Lancasterian Schoolroom (1837) in the world and a rare Galleried Classroom (1853). Museum displays are housed in the 1857 Girl's and Infants' School and the 1905 Edwardian classrooms. This is the most unique and interesting collection of classrooms to be found anywhere. The Headmaster's House is undergoing restoration, and furnishing in the 1880 style. The Museum houses the Jill Grey collection of educational and childhood memorabilia, and the Benchmark Collection of similar but recently-acquired material. These collections cover the period 1798 to 1968, and selections from them are regularly shown.
