 | The Lackham Estate covers 234.20 hectares. This comprises of 15 hectares of Woodland; 24.66 hectares of Buildings and other land; leaving the College Farm 194.54 hectares of productive land. The College is renting 410 hectares from two local landlords, which expands the practical base for the students to both learn practically and give us physical records from a longer arable and livestock base.
The college farm plays two roles; firstly it demonstrates ‘Good Commercial Practices’ and is farmed to produce profits. This enables the education departments to teach commercial production on a successful farm. During 1996 the College Farm linked with Countrywide Farmers, to form an alliance. This alliance helps Countrywide Farmers to test and demonstrate products and the College uses these facilities for educational and comparison purposes.
A small area on the farm is available for an Animal Park, incorporating ‘Lackham Country Attractions’. This area is run by the Animal Care Department and animals on this unit provide a resource for not only residential courses, but also for visiting parties from all over the county. It is also an added attraction to members of the general public visiting the gardens and museum. |
