Athelhampton is one of the finest 15th century manor houses and is surrounded by one of the great architectural gardens of England. The house contains many magnificently furnished rooms. The Great Hall was built in 1485 by Sir William Martyn with permission from Henry VII. The Elizabethan West Wing includes The Great Chamber, Wine Cellar, King's Room and newly opened Library and Billiard Room. The East Wing restored after the fire in November 1992 contains The State and Yellow Bedrooms as well as The Dining Room with a fine collection of Georgian furniture. The house also contains works of art by A.W. Pugin some of which are from the Palace of Westminster. The glorious Grade I gardens, dating from 1891, are full of vistas and gain much from the fountains and River Piddle flowing through. The walled gardens include the world famous topiary pyramids and two garden pavilions designed by Francis Inigo Thomas. Fine collections of tulips, magnolias, roses, clematis and lilies can be seen in season. Also 15th century Dovecote. Athelhampton was often visited by Thomas Hardy and is at the heart of Dorset's heritage.

Athelhampton opens all year round. Our high season March until end of October we open every day except Fridays and Saturdays. During the Winter, November to February we open on Sundays only. The House opens at 11.00am each day and last admissions are at 4.30pm or Dusk if earlier.
