Painshill Landscape Garden
Painshill is one of Europe's finest 18th century landscape gardens. Created by the Hon. Charles Hamilton between 1738 and 1773, it was a pleasure ground for fashionable society. Now undergoing a unique and faithful restoration by a charitable Trust, it is a mysterious and magical place in which to wander. Europa Nostra Medal winner for "exemplary restoration." The garden has been described as landscape theatre in which the spectator moves from scene to scene. Staged around a huge serpentine lake, surprises come at every turn - a Gothic Temple, Chinese Bridge, Ruined Abbey, Grotto, Turkish Tent, Gothic Tower and spectacular waterwheel, all disappear and reappear as the walk proceeds. Painshill is delightful all year round, its moods changing with the seasons. Amongst the buildings, hills and towering cedars the atmosphere is heightened by an array of authentic 18th century plantings; tiers of shrubs, colourful flower beds, even a working vineyard.
